The Union of Private Sector Employees in Chania denounces intimidation attempts towards our union’s board and union members by Teleperformance’s management in Chania.
For long now there have been attempts to drive unionization efforts out the Teleperformance’s site. In clear violation of workers’ rights under laws protecting freedom to unionize, the company has been confiscating union flyers from workers as well as and elected union board members.
This behaviour of the company was also denounced at the labour inspection authority where a tripartite meeting was held between workers, the union and a company a representative after several reports were filed to the authority from workers. The issued decision recognized the rights of the workers and condemned the company’s behavior. The representative of the company had also stated that they would not interfere with the union’s action.
The highlight of Teleperformance’s intimidation was managers calling the police on elected union members today, claiming that the union’s presence there is ‘illegal’, when in fact this is not the case.
In contact with Teleperformance representatives through SETIP, the call center worker’s union in Athens, we were informed that the company stated that the aforementioned incident was a “mistake”. It’s time for the company to finally make some admissions. Are all these actions indeed mistakes, or are they actually so afraid of workers struggling together for humane working conditions?
They will find us right in front of them at every hurdle or excuse they put up. We call on all workers to join the union as we continue to escalate collective struggles. Calling for participation in the 24h strike on April 17 and the labour day strike on May 1st!
